Credit Counseling As A Solution

Have you fallen behind on credit card bills?  Credit counseling may be a practical solution for your situation.  When you use credit counseling, a counselor will work with you to help determine the right amount you are able to afford each month on your bills.  Then your credit counselor contacts your creditors on your behalf to develop the right debt management budget for you based on your capability to pay.  The newly developed payment schedule frequently comes with a decreased interest, which then makes your monthly payments lower.

When you are working with the new debt management budget, it usually makes managing your bills easier.  Most of the time, your payments are going to the credit counselor instead of the creditors.  Then the credit counselor sends your payments onto each creditor on your behalf every month.  Even though you may be on a great debt management plan, you should always monitor all of your accounts to ensure that they are getting paid in a timely manner.

One thing that you should watch is how your accounts are getting reported to the credit bureaus that maintain your credit history.  Although you are still paying your bills every month, you are not actually paying the account as originally agreed, which may have a negative impact on your credit rating.  It may also appear on your credit history that you are working with a credit counselor.

The effect of using credit counseling on your credit rating is similar filing bankruptcy, although not quite as severe.  You might have a hard time obtaining new credit while you are still working with a credit counselor or even after several years while you build a solid repayment history without credit counseling.

You may also not use any credit cards while you are working with a credit counselor.  This may seem tough at first, but it really is a good thing.  It is much easier to climb out of debt when you are not constantly piling it back on.  You should use the time away from using the credit cards in order to learn effective money management.  That way, once you do start using credit cards again, you will have developed good credit habits and will stray from the bad habits that got you into trouble.

Although credit counseling does have some clear disadvantages, it is may still be a good option for debt relief.  If have trouble managing all of your payments and might get behind or you already are late with your payments, then credit counseling may be right for you.  In most cases, it can help prevent your credit rating from getting seriously damaged and get you back on track.
